Kidnapping and Imprisonment

On the morning of March 16, 1978, Moro was going to the Chamber of Deputies where the vote of confidence was scheduled for Andreotti’s fourth government (an one-party, DC, executive, supported by PCI and by the other parties which had abstained from voting against the preceding government). His car was assaulted by a group of BR terrorists. Moro’s bodyguards were killed and he was kidnapped. His imprisonment lasted 55 days, during which he was allowed to send some letters, delivered by his jailers (copies of other letters of his were found in a BR base in 1990). Despite the efforts of the police, the hostage was not released. Moro was murdered on May 9, 1978, and his body was found in the trunk of a car parked in the very centre of Rome.
